The aim of the Anglican Institute for School Leadership is to sharpen the Church’s mission to young people and their families. It is designed to equip leadership in our church schools with the ability and confidence to be spiritual leaders.
According to the Dearing Report of 2001, ‘If the children are not coming to us we must go to them. Church schools are the Church’s major opportunity to serve young people. It is an opportunity more and more parents are asking the Church to take.’ The Dearing Report rightly points out that ‘the Church needs to promote teaching as a vocation of equal status to the priesthood.'
We agree with both these statements.
This programme will enable leaders in our schools to acquire theological knowledge and expertise in order for them to become ‘priests’ in our schools. They will do what the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie, once called for: ‘Nourish those of the faith; encourage those of other faiths; challenge those who have no faith.’
