Professional Doctorate in Missiology (DMiss)
Cliff College is very pleased to have recently received approval from the University of Manchester for our new Professional Doctorate in Missiology (DMiss). We are the only college in Europe offering such a programme and look forward to this qualification becoming recognised as the leading missiological academic award. As such it will compliment our MA in Mission and our PhD/MPhil programmes.
The DMiss programme is designed to facilitate doctoral level reflection on the practice of Christian mission. It will be applicable for those engaged in mission through employment in mission organisations, as church ministers (ordained or lay) or for church members who, while not in employment related to mission, have substantial ongoing experience of mission.
A Professional Doctorate is the same academic level as a PhD and is recognised as such. While primarily for practitioners, the DMiss will also be acknowledged as a qualification enabling someone to teach and supervise research students in a university.
The following is a brief outline of the programme:
Start Date: September annually; first start in September 2011
Qualifications needed: A good MA will be the normal entry point. A student will also need to be engaged in mission and have at least 3 years experience of mission practice.
Time scale: The programme will take 6 years part-time to complete. It can be taken as a full-time programme in exceptional circumstances.
Year 1 attend two 5 day teaching blocks and produce a 12,000 word review of key literature
Year 2 attend two 5 day teaching blocks and produce a 12,000 word peer review journal quality article
Year 3 attend two 5 day teaching blocks and produce a 12,000 word research project proposal
Years 4-6 work with a supervisor to produce a 40,000 word dissertation (or a 20,000 word dissertation with further practical outcomes), attend three Day Conferences per year
Final awards: After year 3 it will be possible to exit the programme and be awarded a MPhil degree. If work does not reach doctoral level at year 3, the MPhil degree may be awarded. After year 6 the successful candidate will be awarded ‘the Professional Doctorate in Missiology’ or DMiss.
Cost: The financial cost of a DMiss is the same as that of a PhD and will be per year £2045 (academic fee), £280 (meals and accommodation during teaching blocks), £175 (University validation fee). The total cost for 2010-11 will be £2500. Annual rises no higher than inflation are anticipated on this programme.
