PhD Miss Programme

PhD in Missiology

Started in September 2011, we look forward to this qualification becoming recognised as the leading missiological academic award. As such, it complements our MA in Mission and our PhD/MPhil programmes.

This PhD (Miss) programme is designed to facilitate doctoral level reflection on the practice of Christian mission. It will be applicable for those engaged in mission through employment in mission organisation, as church ministers (ordained or lay) or for church members who, while not in employment related to mission, have substantial ongoing experience of mission.

A Professional Doctorate is the same academic level as a PhD and is recognised as such.  While primarily for practitioners, the PhD (Miss) will also be acknowledged as a qualification enabling someone to teach and supervise research students in a university.

The following is a brief outline of the programme:

Start date

September annually

Qualifications needed

An MA with Merit or equivalent will be the normal entry point.  A student will also need to be engaged in mission and have at least three years' experience of mission practice.

Time scale

The programme will be undertaken on a part-time basis, taking six years to complete.  It can be taken as a full-time programme in exceptional circumstances.

  • Years 1-3      attend two five-day teaching blocks each year producing a Portfolio (35-40,000 words) including a Literature Review, Methodology and Publishable Article,      and a Research Project Proposal (minor revisions to years 1-3 subject to University of Manchester final approval).

  • Years 46    work with a supervisor to produce a 40-45,000 word thesis (or a practical outcome accompanied by a 20-45,000 word thesis); attend three Day Conferences per year.

Final awards

After year three it will be possible to exit the programme and be awarded a MPhil degree. If work does not reach doctoral level at year three, the MPhil degree may be awarded.  After year six the successful candidate will be awarded the Professional Doctorate in Missiology.  This award is known as PhD (Miss).
