Luke in the Holy Land: 2nd – 13th July 2020
Now a regular part of the academic life of the college, the 12 day ‘Luke in the Holy Land’ study tour is based in Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth, and leads to the Cliff College Certificate in Contextual Theology (Israel/Palestine). Exploring text in context, whilst walking the streets of Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth, the teaching is delivered via a series of evening lectures, group seminars and individual study all guided and led by Cliff College staff and local guides. There are opportunities to meet with members from a variety of local communities both in formal and informal settings. Travelling as a group of 15, Cliff College students and Alumni are invited to consider this opportunity, with any spare places being offered to members of the Methodist Church.
With over 20 years of mission experience in the Middle East, Ian White, Senior Tutor & Short Course Programme Leader, Cliff College leads the programme. Ian is also Executive Director of Micah68 with a ministry in Israel/Palestine, Egypt and Jordan. We are delighted that seminar teaching will be offered by Rev Dr Stephen Skuce, previously Academic Dean at Cliff College and now District Superintendent, the North Western District, The Methodist Church in Ireland.

The study tour considers how we read scripture contextually against the backdrop of the land exploring biblical, theological and contemporary themes. Accommodation is on the Via Dolorosa of the Old City of Jerusalem, amongst families in Bethlehem in the south, and in the heart of the Old Ciy of Nazareth in the north, and our classrooms will include the Mount of Olives, the Western Wall and Temple Mount, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Garden of Gethsemane and the Holocaust Museum of Yad Vashem in the south, and in the north the Sea of Galilee, the town of Capernaum and Nazareth Village. During the trip there will be opportunity to meet with several of the Micah68 project partners. Please note that this is mainly a walking tour, and participants will need to be in good physical health and be able to walk up to 5 miles per day in warm temperatures.
More details of the programme can be offered on enquiry.
Participation in the study course together with submitted assessment following the trip, leads to the Cliff College Certificate in Contextual Theology (Israel/Palestine). Student assessment is flexible to suit the needs and interests of the participants, and could be one of the questions already set, a more personal theological reflection or a question relating to a specific issue of their interest as agreed by the Course Leader, Ian White. Assessment is via one piece of assignment work of 3000 words, and academic guidance would be given by the course leadership during the study tour.
“Going on the Luke in the Holy Land trip was an experience like no other. You visit places that you’ve read about in the Bible and see things that will both challenge and affirm your faith. You get to meet the locals and see first-hand the differences in both the culture and context. A fantastic trip which I would recommend to anyone.’
The cost of £1,495.00 includes flights from Manchester, transport within Israel, breakfast & evening meal and an en-suite shared bedroom, from 2-13 July 2020. Please contact email@example.com for further details of the trip, and of the Certificate in Contextual Theology (Israel/Palestine), or download the booking form attached. Please note that priority is given to current and Alumni Cliff College students, although applications are now welcomed from members of the Methodist Church.
