Cliff College statement following Methodist Conference 2021

Cliff College cherishes both its evangelical heritage and its continuing place within the Methodist Church. As one of the Methodist Church’s learning institutions it exists to serve the whole church as a place of academic rigour and deep theological conversations, equipping women and men for evangelism and service within the church and the world, as it serves Christ in the present age.

The College acknowledges the decisions made by the recent Methodist Conference on marriage and relationships. In the Methodist Church, as in every denomination, this has revealed some deeply held views within our family. We also recognise that Christians of equal sincerity hold differing views and that each one is genuinely seeking to live as a faithful disciple of Christ.

Cliff College, as an institution rooted firmly in the Methodist family, is being called to foster a spirit of understanding and respect for all, seeking reconciliation between those who could so easily be divided at this moment in the life of our denomination. Therefore, Cliff is committed to being a hospitable place, where those with differing views are welcomed and challenged to live together as faithful disciples of Christ.

We want to take this opportunity of affirming our continuing commitment to the authority of Scripture and the love of God for every individual irrespective of their sexuality; and to assure the church, our students, prospective students and supporters that the College will faithfully continue to serve its Saviour and live out God’s mission in the church and the world, by seeking reconciliation instead of division and understanding instead of suspicion.
