This Postgraduate Certificate includes the unit Preaching, Worship and Mission, taught by Rev Dr Pete Phillips and exploring contemporary trends, cultures and practices in preaching as well as digital expressions of church. Students will also have the opportunity to critically reflect on their own practice in a particular church or preaching context - it is therefore important that students have an existing preaching ministry to reflect on, whether this is in one church or across a circuit or group of churches. If you are only just exploring a call to preach, then look out for other opportunities at Cliff College in 2026.
About the programme
Students on this Postgraduate Certificate will take three units over 12 months:
- Preaching, Worship and Mission (lecture week 19-23 January 2026)
- Missional Theology in Practice (spring/summer 2026)
- Missional Theology (lecture week 28 September-2 October 2026)
All three units can be accessed online from anywhere in the world using our virtual learning platform. You can choose to travel to Cliff College’s campus in Derbyshire for a week of lectures for the January and autumn units, or you can participate in our hybrid classroom via video call. Students will also need to participate in online learning and seminars around these lecture weeks and will need to submit assessed work for each unit.
The second unit, Missional Theology in Practice, includes a period of learning in context and subsequent critical reflection on the practice of preaching in that context. This can be taken any time in the spring and summer months of 2026, as agreed with your unit lead.
Discounted places
We are pleased that due to some generous partner funding, we can offer a small number of discounted places on this programme for students from Methodist and Wesleyan churches – recipients of this funding will receive a bursary for £1,650, which is half of the course fee for the Postgraduate Certificate (£3,300). Applicants interested in this bursary should apply for the programme first, and then for the bursary once they have received the offer of a place. Discounted places are limited and will be awarded on a first come, first served basis, so we encourage you to apply as soon as possible if you are interested in this opportunity.
